"lincoln" with daniel day-lewis as the president. first, let's get to the news. 30 rock here in new york city. we begin with the wave of anti-american protests sweeping the middle east and africa. it's in 11 countries including iran, iraq and sudan. protesters are gathering for a fourth straight day outside the u.s. embassy. the riot police are there, dodging projectiles. that's a live picture at 11:30 in the morning in cairo. protesters demanding vengeance for an obscure internet movie they find offensive that was produced in the united states. the government repeated they have no affiliation with the movie. president obama had a blunt late night phone call with egypt's new president, morsi.

president obama warning it could be jeopardizes if they don't take a stand against american attacks. too little too late. morsi asked for $5 billion in loans from the inf telling egyptians it is their duty to protect our guests. in yemens a mob scene. they evacuated to a safe location and no embassy staff was injured. there was still plenty of damage as you can see in the pictures. hundreds of protesters tore through the security wall and smashed bullet-proof windows and torching cars. yemen's president immediately apologized to president obama for the attacks. new developments on the attack in benghazi. we'll get the latest on that. first, we go to cairo.

jim is standing by. what is the latest there? >> reporter: hi, willie. it's getting quite noisy here now. several hundred protesters who were setting up camp overnight on tahrir square tried to make another go of it this morning. actually, just about an hour ago, outside the u.s. embassy. they tried to move on the embassy. they fired tear gas. there are concrete blocks blocking off the access to the embassy. it frustrates the crowd even more. a few minutes ago, they marched around the square. they are doing that now chanting, god is great. it's felt like a protest taking place inside a bubble. all this happening near the embassy. this cat and mouse stand off. life goes on normally in the rest of cairo. today, that could change because president morsi and the muslim

brotherhood are calling for nationwide protests after friday prayers in a couple hours. these are to take place outside the mosques which take the pressure out of this area here. a lot of protesters let off some steam. many of these people in the streets are calling for the burning of the antiislam film and the hanging death of the protesters. willie? >> help me out with this. president morsi, in a phone call a couple nights ago, apologizes and urges calm. today, he's calling for more protests. do i have that right? >> reporter: he's calling -- well, it's a fine line. there's no question, this is a test case for morsi. he is calling for protests but he's calling for peaceful and dignified protests. he's warned, in the same breath as he called for the protests

his authority, his people, his security forces will crack down if there's effort to destroy property or hurt foreigners. >> wow. quite a time. jim is live in cairo. we'll check in with you throughout the day. now to libya, where four americans, including chris stevens was killed during the raid on the us consulate. libyan officials say there have been a number of arrests linked to the attack. they are continuing to investigate if it was timed to mark the 9/11 anniversary or if someone tipped off the attackers to the safe house where many americans were hiding. two were killed trying to protect their colleagues. they were identified as a pair of navy s.e.a.l.s. tyrone woods from portland, oregon, the other glen doherty from massachusetts.

they were hired to do private security detail. they have extensive experience in iraq and afghanistan. we are learning more about the film, if you want to call it that. u.s. officials were aware content was broadcast saturday on an arabic tv show. it didn't prompt strong warnings from the state department. one american official says you can't freak out on everything that is broadcast online. it would be like crying wolf. yesterday, secretary of state, hillary clinton, emphasized the u.s. government has nothing to do with that film. >> to me, personally, this video is disgusting and reprehensible. it appears to have a deeply cynical purpose to denigrate a great religion and to provoke rage. but, as i said yesterday, there is no justification, none at

all. for respondliing to this video with violence. eric holder is cutting short a foreign trip and heading to washington to help head the investigation. a day after mitt romney was criticized by democrats and republicans alike for attacking the president while an international crisis was unfolding, the candidate defended himself rejecting he is politicizing the events overseas. >> what i said was exactly the same conclusion the white house reached, which was the statement was inappropriate. that's why they backed away as well. >> they didn't say they were showing sympathy for the attackers. >> it wasn't directly applicable and appropriate. i think it should have been taken down. the white house felt the same way. >> when the president says you shoot first and aim later. >> this is politics, i'm not

worrying about the campaign. >> he softened a bit on his foreign policy. the republican candidate made a passing reference to the situation in libya and egypt. in a rally in denver, president obama addressed the situation offering a blunt message to a broader audience. >> to all those who would do us harm, no act of terror will go unpunished. it will not dim the light of the values that we proudly present to the rest of the world. no act of violence shakes the resolve of the united states of america. >> coming off the political convention, president obama is leading now, mitt romney in three battleground states. the president has a five-point lead in virginia and florida. in ohio, his lead is up to seven points in the nbc news/wall street journal poll.

president obama took them all in 2008. romney needs to win at least two of these three states to win the presidency. he now trails outside the margin of error in all three. in other news, the president's job approval at 50% in ohio. 49% in florida and virginia. for if first time, 40% of voters in those states say the country is headed in the right direction. the stock market will open way up this morning after the federal reserve announced a program to spur hiring. they will buy mortgage backed security and keep interest rates low for years. romney said the move is proof the president is failing to get the economy back on track. >> what bernanke is doing is saying the president is wrong. the president is saying the economy is making progress. bernanke is saying we have to print more money. >> you wouldn't reappoint him if

you won? >> i would appoint someone i selected rather than the current incumbe incumbent. >> we turn to cnbc. jeff, what is the impact of fed action here? >> you can see this all across the markets, willie. if i can explain the significance of this in straight forward terms. ben bernanke brought a tank to a gunfight. he told the market we are going to buy $40 billion worth of mortgage backed securities every month from now on in until we get the unemployment number below 8%. they are going for 6% or less. he said he's going to do anything that they can do at this point to achieve that goal by buying paper. they are going to run operation twister at $45 billion a month alongside this. so, previous actions continue. oh, and they are continuing it. they are going to extend the low

interest rate window through 2015. so, boy, he's put the market on no uncertain term that is he is ready to pull the trigger if need b. back to you, willie. >> jeff, thanks so much. an update on the teacher's strike in chicago. they are getting closer to a deal. talks ended for the day. the school board president said both sides had serious number crunching to do to get students back in school by monday. today is the fifth day of the strike. details of a deal unclear. it's possible the union could vote on a tentative plan today or over the weekend to get the kids back to school on monday. still ahead on "way too early," panic in green bay. they lost a year after going 15-1. last night, with help from jay cutler, the packers got their act together. highlights from the nfl and

these are the latest pictures out of cairo where anti-american protests enter a fourth day. the united states is re-evaluating their relationship with egypt. according to "the new york times" president obama told egyptian president morsi that relations between the two countries would be in jeopardy if they didn't stand firm against anti-american attacks. the united states kurntdly provides $1.5 billion a year in foreign aid to egypt. $1.5 billion. israel is the only country in the world that receives more money from the united states. now for the real news, let's huddle up around the water cooler to watch the real bump out of the political conventions. it belongs not to president obama or mitt romney, but to the boss.
